Dhoni greatest ever India skipper, says Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly, India's most winning captain, yesterday hailed Mahendra Singh Dhoni as "the greatest ever" to lead the Indian cricket team.

"There can't be any doubt about it. Dhoni is the greatest captain of our country. His record is proof of that," Ganguly told MiD DAY.

"Under Dhoni, India have won the T20 World Cup and the (ODI) Asia Cup. Under his leadership, India have become the No 1 ranked side in Test cricket. And now, we have won the World Cup. Obviously, he is the greatest ever captain to lead India."

Ganguly, who led India to the final in the 2003 World Cup, said he knew that Dhoni's men would triumph.

"When they beat Australia (in the quarter-final) I knew India would win the World Cup. A lot of people thought Sri Lanka would win, but I was confident," he said.

The Prince of Kolkata praised Dhoni's match-winning knock of 91 not out in the final. "According to me, Dhoni played his best innings in the final. He played a perfect captain's innings," Ganguly said.

Ganguly was impressed by Gautam Gambhir's knock of 97 as well. "Gambhir played brilliantly. First, he ensured there was no further fall of wicket, then he smoothly accelerated the innings. I liked the way he batted," he said.
