The truth
I am in a lethal and dangerously eloquent state at the moment. The pen is bleeding poison, but righteous poison nonetheless. I am tired of people thinking that they can treat me inadequately. Isn’t it just as well I got the silver, my pets, because the bullets will sting and hit home a few stark truths.
I do sometimes revel in maliciousness; i1t’s a Scorpio trait. We can rip people apart with our words.
On a specific level, I immensely dislike not hearing from someone in God knows how long, only to receive an email asking me for a favour. This person is either completely stupid or entirely insensitive. A relationship that had been dying for a long time finally breathed its last at the start of last month and I have not deigned to bore any of my associates with the details (although the ending was brought about by my own hand). Because I’m “fun” Laura. I’m expected to be entertaining, to look glamorous, to willingly listen to everyone’s stories (the ones that stretch on for two hours about people I have never met REALLY interest me, honestly). I’m not naturally one of these feminine, confiding souls but it would be nice to have someone who takes enough interest to actually enquire after me every so often, rather than someone who appears and vanishes on a whim and talks of nothing but themselves when they do appear.
The other specific matter will remain confidential, for now.
I don’t know if I’m too smart, too harsh or too much of a lone wolf to keep these acquaintances. Are most people simply a disappointment or do I expect too much of them?
Having re-read “The Beautiful and Damned”, I can relate entirely to Gloria. Her disgust at motherhood, weak men and eternal restlessness apply to me perfectly.
So, that’s it. I was considering being a good sport but now I realise I have nothing to lose by behaving as casually as others behave towards me. In the past, I think I have chosen and stood by the wrong people; they have elected to waste my time rather than had the balls to tell me to fuck off if they didn’t want to spend any time with me. I’m a strong person; I want a straight answer rather than people who think they can keep me hanging on in a state of confusion as to what they want from me. These opponents obviously do not want to deal with the truth.
I realise that this is deeply personal, hence why I’ve avoided being TOO specific. I simply had to get it off my chest and am really sorry to the unsuspecting people who are likely to read this. I suspect the ones who have pissed me off won’t even cast an eye.
And if they do, at least they'll get the truth.
Chalo Dilli - Movie review
Chalo Dilli
U/A; COMEDY
Dir: Shashant Shah
Cast: Lara Dutta, Vinay Pathak, Akshay Kumar
**
What's it about: Lara Dutta and Vinay Pathak definitely make an odd pairing almost like Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell in Elf. The only difference being while the latter worked cause of the two talents put together the former doesn't quite make the same impression.
Set against the rickety backdrop of a journey from Mumbai to Delhi via some perilous adventures Chalo Dilli has Lara in the role of an investment banker who's surrounded by the luxury of assistants and Louis Vitton accessories.
Not knowing what's going to happen to her over the period of the next few days she makes a journey to Dilli but lands up in Jaipur and has a bumbling simpleton Manu (Vinay) to blame.
As expected they are opposites, while she rolls her R's while speaking he spits out tobacco between every pause. Despite their mutual dislike for one another the two have no choice but to make the most of the given situation.
What's hot: There are moments when the film sparkles and they come in the form of witty one liners or punches. Pitching Lara and Vinay opposite each other and putting them in the most awkward situations manages to bring out some humor.
Most of the chuckles come when they are stranded in a remote village and begin their journey to Dilli. Vinay Pathak is an absolute charmer and plays his part to perfection. His Manu feels like a bloke you could meet somewhere during a train journey. Lara brings the correct dose of sarcasm and rebuttal to her character.
What's not: The film's biggest drawback is the fact that it falls into the dangerous trap of coming off as one-dimensional. Once we are introduced to Lara and Vinay, there's nothing different or new that we can expect. Most of the arguments, fights, banter and goof ups are super predictable.
Also the second half, especially the climax is more sugar coated than a Hersheys bar. Instead of getting preachy and wanting to send out a message, they should let it be a fun affair.
The serious dramatic overturn towards the end punctures the average run of the film towards the very end. There's a serious overkill of trying to get the audience's waterworks running. But it just doesn't seem genuine. The songs are strictly average and Yana's Laila act does nothing to impress.
What to do: Chalo Dilli sets out on the right footing but doesn't quite make the impression one would expect.
Shor in the City - Movie review
Shor in the City
A; Drama/Thriller
Dir: Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK
Cast: Tusshar Kapoor, Nikhil Dwivedi, Pitobash, Sundeep Kishan, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Radhika Apte, Preeti Desai
****
What's it about: This isn't the first time a film captures the essence of the dark under belly of Mumbai. Neither is this a first attempt at weaving different stories that move towards a common end. So what makes SITC stand out in a crowd? Contrary to general belief it's the simple straight forward approach of the directors in telling a bunch of interesting stories that makes Shor instantly likeable.
Rather than showing off style and technique, the focus is on the remarkable screenplay which delivers from the opening frame. Set against the backdrop of the popular Ganpati Festival we are introduced to three friends running a piracy business Tilak (Tusshar), Ramesh (Nikhil) and Mandook (Pitobash).
They might look like menacing hoodlums but the scruffy faces mask their inner vulnerability. Next is a young boy Sawan (Sundeep Kishan) desperate to play cricket for the country at any cost.
When faced with a challenge to raise money to get his place in the team he goes all out to get the job done! The third and final chapter is of Abhay (Sendhil) an entrepreneur wanting to start off a new life in the city. Even though Mumbai welcomes him with open arms, he faces elements that change the course of his destiny.
What's hot: There is a certain raw appeal to the story that oozes sincerity rather than a contrived attempt to look 'cool'. Full marks for putting together an ensemble that wins half the battle for the film.
Performances are stellar. While new comers Pitobash and Kishan leave an incredible first impression, the seniors Tusshar, Nikhil and Sendhil bring expertise and experience to the table.
What impresses is the fact that none of these actors seems lost or dazed while playing their parts. Following their directors cue they do exactly what they are told sometimes even going the extra mile to add chutzpah to their effort.
The camaraderie between Nikhil, Tusshar and Pitobash seems extremely natural and easy. While the latter gets to play to the gallery, the former two show utmost restraint when needed.
Sendhil's transformation towards the end and the process leading up to it is portrayed brilliantly by this under rated actor. He has a heady mix of unconventional good looks and embodies an element of mystery to his character.
Sundeep Kishan brilliantly captures the angst of a youngster troubled by the insecurity of his future and uncertainty of the present. Technically Shor has no faults the cinematography has a voyeuristic feel as it caresses and captures every nook, lane and turn of Mumbai.
Background score and the sound track both give the film an energetic, zingy sound. Despite the ominous looking poster, don't' expect SITC to be a serious affair. It's loaded with humor, sarcasm and wit in the least expected places.
That truly is the beauty of the makers who succeed in arresting you with their tales. What stands out is the spectacular climax that's easily one of the best written in recent times. Watch out for the bomb defusion scene that will have you on the edge of the seat!
What's not: While the second half holds the momentum, the first takes times to settle down. Also the supporting ladies Preeti Desai and Radhika Apte despite their glamour and good looks don't add much to the story. Eventually Shor ends up being a guy affair with the ladies reduced to being props.
What to do: Shor hits the right decibels to make sound enough for you to sit up and notice. A definite recco for the weekend.
Akshay returns to action after 10 yrs
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Rowdy Rathore will be an out-and-out action thriller
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is bringing back Akshay Kumar to doing what he does the best -- delivering action flicks. His next project, Rowdy Rathore is co-produced by designer Shabinaa Khan, who has dressed stars like Ajay Devgn and Salman Khan in the past. The out-and-out action film starring Akshay and Sonakshi Sinha, is being directed by Prabhudeva. A source said, "Rowdy Rathore is expected to break the stereotypical boundaries of action genre. It will see Akshay get back to the space in which he remains undefeated -- hardcore action! Audiences have loved him in action sequences. In fact in Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om, Akshay's gun sequence was one of the most-loved scenes in the film.
Ready for action: Akshay Kumar will have to undergo special training
before he shoots the hi-tech action scenes of the film. File Pic
The actor will undergo rigorous physical training in preparation for the film that will have top notch action and choreography. The producers and director are planning to put together an international action team for the fight sequences, including an ace action director from the south. Akshay will be training for three months before the shooting starts. He'll also be learning a special kind of martial art for that. Although he has one of the best physiques in B-Town today, for Rowdy Rathore he will require a leaner, muscular and toned body for which he will have to undergo training."
Producer Shabinaa said, "Rowdy Rathore is an action-packed script and we felt that only Akshay could do complete justice to the role. He hasn't starred in an out-and-out action film for the last 10 years, so Rowdy Rathore will bring him back into his space like never before." For Shabinaa who is producing a film for the first time it's an exciting proposition. "I'm very excited about my first production film and I am proud to have such a talented team on board. I hope audiences love the film too."
However, for Bhansali, producing action film would be a new experience. "An action film is a totally alien concept for me. At this juncture as a filmmaker, I want to move out of the comfort zone and do things that are new and untried," he admitted.
Mr Khiladi
Akshay Kumar has so far starred in many action flicks like Khiladi, Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Mohra, Sabse Bada Khiladi, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, Sangharsh, Jaanwar, Blue. Interestingly, all his action movies with the name 'Khiladi' have been superhits.
